Take a little bit of the Supernatural world, mix in a bit of Sherlock Holmes detective work, mix in a little child friendly H.P. Lovecraft, and throw in some clever banter and you have the perfect first book in a young adult fiction series.

I picked this audiobook up a couple of years ago through the SYNC YA program, which offers free audiobooks on a weekly basis every summer.  This one has been sitting on my iPod unlistened to for a bit and I said, alright time for another YA novel.

YA novels can be hit or miss.  Either they are so full of cliches that I just can’t listen or read or they will be fun.  This one turned out to be fun, LOTS of fun.  I became attached to the character of Stephanie immediately, and same can be said about the skeleton detective known as Skullduggery Pleasant.

Stephan inherits, much to the dismay of her relatives, a house from her Uncle Gordon, she is to take possession of the properties when she reaches the age of 18.  So we have to wait 6 years for the adventures?  Nope!  Stephanie is a curious sort and, due to strange circumstances, spends the night at the house she has inherited.  She had befriended her uncle because of her interest in books. Uncle Gordon wrote lots of horror fiction and Stephanie is about to find out they weren’t exactly fiction.

Skullduggery Pleasant comes to her rescue when a minion comes to find a scepter.  The sceptre is needed to raise the nameless ones for an evil man to take over the world.  Finding the scepter and stopping the releasing of the nameless ones now becomes part of Stephanie’s life.

Great adventures with nods to a slew of great horror writers.  I will now have to continue with the series because it is just so much fun.

The narrator, Rupert Degas, is outstanding especially in his vocal characterizations of Skullduggery.  Well worth the listen.

The iconic first book in the best-selling Skulduggery Pleasant series.
