The only audio edition of Necronomicon authorized by the H. P. Lovecraft Estate!  Well hearing that I had to jump on board and give it a listen.  I don’t know how many times in my life I have read a Lovecraft story, but I will never turn down another chance.  Especially when it is well done as this audiobook.  The different narrators bring in a different aspect of the story that makes the whole audiobook a keeper.

Now, I know just as well as anyone that Lovecraft takes some getting used to.  In fact his works can be hit or miss, no matter how many times I read the story.  A perfect example of what I’m trying to say is the story,”The Color Out of Space.”  There have been times when I read this that it is just the most awesome creepy story ever. Yet other times I think maybe some hack wrote it.  (don’t get mad at me, yet)  When it is working for me it knocks me silly, and I feel like one of the characters that gets too close to the meteorite and loses his mind, because the story is that good.  Yet sometimes when I read it I think, Lovecraft got out cheaply by instead of describing the color he says a color you cannot imagine.  This is one of the reasons I hate Superman, his powers are not explained just there.  This time though, and I’m sure it had to do with the audiobook version, I was knocked for a loop and wanted more.

Another example of how this audiobook is different than any other is the voice of Bronson Pinchot.  While I like him as an actor, I have just never been a fan of his audiobook narrations.  Believe me I have tried, but something about his delivery just always (until now) turns me off the book.  This time though, Pinchot knocked it out of the park.  His voice was the perfect match for the Lovecraft stories.  The other narrators were great also, but this is the first time I’ve really enjoyed Bronson Pinchot in an audiobook.
